Every year around November, basketball begins their season with new players and skill techniques, and this year, with some new coaches.
The Azle Lady Hornets’ first game was on Nov. 1 this year. While JV and the Freshman Lady Hornets lost, the varsity Lady Hornets came out with the win overall.
“I was very proud of how the girls played their first game,” new JV Coach Amanda Seymour said. “And regardless of the score, it was excellent to see the chemistry together.”
Freshman Angel Sifuentes is a new addition to the varsity team this year. She said she couldn’t be more excited to move up.
“I was super excited when I got called in the coach’s office, and they told me I was put on varsity,” freshman Angel Sifuentes said. “Our first game went well, and we all could tell that season was going to be good from the bus ride home.”
Being moved up to varsity is an accomplishment for almost everyone and a fear for some, too.
“I’m the only freshman on varsity, so it makes it a little intimidating to be with all the upperclassmen,” Sifuentes said. “Although, for the season, I’m so excited to be playing with everyone, and it’s a good way to take advantage of the playing time. I feel like I’m getting better since the intensity.”
Everyone has different goals for this season and carries this talent with different experiences in playing basketball.
“I’m playing a little bit of a different position so I’ve had to learn to adjust,” Eviana Quillin said. “I have been playing basketball since I was in elementary school and traveled with club teams so basketball has been a huge part of my life since I was little.”
With seniors leaving they have different feelings about not being able to play basketball for their high school anymore
“I’m most excited to go and give it my all,” senior Eviana Quillin said. “Since I’m a senior this year, I want to go out on a good note. I have new teammates. A lot of people left so a lot of new people came to the team.”
Being a senior on the team also means receiving scholarships and scouting from colleges, and there are many decisions to be made in this process.
“I’m currently getting recruited and getting looked at by different colleges, and this is a great opportunity for me to stay in basketball,” senior Abbey Natusch said.
