For the first time in Azle’s history, the varsity volleyball team reached regionals, delivering a season that will be remembered for making it all the way to the regional semifinals.
“Falling short sucks,” senior captain Destiny Brune said. “But it was never about the final outcome but really about going out there and being uncommon.”
“Uncommon-ness” was a theme amongst the volleyball team this year, and it was their desire to do things differently that they attributed to their success.
“We didn’t just want to be another volleyball team in Azle but be something bigger and lay a foundation out for the future of the program’s history,” senior co-captain Elizabeth Lund said.
Unity was another idea that came up frequently from the team.
“We’re really a family since we’ve grown up with each other and been with each other even when things haven’t gone our way,” senior Gabby Briseno said.
Junior Miley Massey shared a similar sentiment.
“We play for each other, not for ourselves,” she said. “It’s not about who scores but rather how we score together.”
From the start of the season, the team said they embraced a higher purpose and a commitment to being different.
“From the first practice, it was clear this team had something special,” head coach Kenley Buckholt said. “They believed in each other and the process. They’ve made history, and I couldn’t be prouder of their growth.”
During the grind of the season, volleyball became more than just a sport, it became their way of life.
“In volleyball season, we live, breathe, and sleep volleyball,” Miley Massey said. “It’s a commitment we all take seriously because we know what we’re working toward.”
Now that the season is over, the team looks to the future. The seniors have left a lasting legacy, setting a precedent for excellence and unity. Meanwhile, the underclassmen and coaching staff are determined to build on the foundation laid this year.
“We want our players to not only succeed on the court but also off the court,” Buckholt said. “This team has proven what’s possible, and I know the best is yet to come for Azle volleyball.”
The journey may not have ended with a championship title, but it will be remembered for more than just the scoreboard.
“This is just the beginning,” Buckholt said. “The standard has been set, and the future of volleyball is brighter than ever.”
