Drum Corps International is an organization that was formed in 1972 in Indianapolis, where High School marching band students compete from different states. Getting into a DCI group can be challenging and only a few handful of high school students make it. Azle has a few students who have committed to a DCI group.

Band director Greg Davis is a former Carolina Crown member, a DCI group, playing the tuba.

“I learned about perseverance, grit, hard work and loyalty,” Davis said. “I marched there for six years. I could've gone to other groups but I didn’t. “

Davis said his loyalty to the Carolina Crowns and what he gained while marching with them is what he credits with making him a successful band director to AHS.

Assistant Band Director Matthew Assis was a former Blue Devils euphonium player when he was 21. He was a rook-out, which means he was a rookie during the age-out year. An age out year is the maximum age you can be while in DCI, the age range is from 16-21 and 21 years old is the max age you can be to participate in a group.

Junior Madelyn Tucker committed to the Troopers in Wyoming, playing the trumpet. She plans on training for one month during the start of the summer with the rehearsals running 12 hours every day. After which, she will travel the country for the following two months competing.

“I really wanted to march and for the experience,” Madelyn said. “I really enjoy marching and want to do it after high school.”

Junior Emily O’Neill is marching with the Santa Clara Vanguards from Santa Clara, California playing percussion. Last year, the Santa Clara Vanguards won first place at finals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

“I want to have the experience of traveling the country and performing for thousands of people,” Emily said. “Enhancing my musical abilities and getting smarter about music and becoming independent is my goal.”
