The Sting Appreciates Mr. Assis

Being a first-year teacher is no small feat, but you’d never guess it watching our assistant band director, Mr. Assis. From day one, he’s brought not only talent and skill to our program, but a kind of energy and humor that makes even the most challenging or exhausting rehearsals something to look forward to.

From the first day he stepped into the band hall, you could tell he wasn’t just here to fill a role. He came in with energy, passion, and a genuine desire to connect with students. What impressed me most wasn’t just his musicianship—it was how naturally he worked with students who struggled. He doesn’t shy away from tough moments or frustrated learners. Instead, he meets them with patience, encouragement, and smart, effective guidance that actually helps.

I’ve seen students light up after finally grasping a difficult rhythm because he took the time to walk them through it. I’ve seen kids who were ready to give up leave rehearsals feeling proud and motivated—all because he believed in them and made sure they knew it.

He’s organized, dependable and sharp, but more than that, he’s kind. He leads with a quiet confidence and shows up every day ready to help in whatever way he’s needed, whether that’s running sectionals, fixing scores or just being there for a student who’s having a rough day.

This is only his first year, but it’s hard to imagine the program without him. I’ve learned a lot from watching the way he teaches, listens and supports everyone around him. His work deserves to be recognized, and I’m incredibly grateful to have him on our team. Thank you, Mr. Assis!
