As Dallas Mavericks fans know, on Feb. 4 the team shockingly traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis and Max Christie, along with the first draft pick round. This move sparked lots of debate among fans. With many fans saying that this was the worst trade-off decision in Mavericks’s history. 

NBA teams often exchange or “trade” players from team to team strategically to improve their rosters for their upcoming seasons. The trading system has been around since the early stages of the league, but it’s become more complex over time.

These trades are sometimes known to be risky, as the traded players have to be successful long-term. Some trades lead to victories, while others result in major setbacks that may leave fans upset.

Doncic has been the heart and soul of the Mavericks since the beginning of 2018 when he was drafted. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year thanks to his ability to score and show up on the court with a passion. This is all the more reason why Mavs fans are upset to let this talented player go. 

As Doncic, who is now on the Lakers, will be shaping the team’s roster for years to come, it all comes down to the reality of how it all unfolded which leaves the whole aspect and outlook of the situation even more controversial among these Dallas supporters. 

Letting Luka Doncic go may not seem bad until you realize what a fan-favorite player he is. He’s been the face of the Dallas franchise and he’s someone who has shaped the Mavericks in the best ways possible. Losing him may not just make the team struggle, but losing him from a fan morale stance as a whole.
