Baby-tees, low-rise jeans, and butterfly clips, the fashion of the Y2K era was lively, bold, glittery, and sometimes questionable. Get ready to blast into the past as the student council embraces the Y2K aesthetic for this year’s homecoming theme, “That’s so homecoming: Y2K,” with a week of themed dress-up days.

The dress-up days will take place the week leading up to the football game on Friday, Oct. 24, with the Hornets playing the Granbury Pirates. Of course, it isn’t homecoming without a dance, taking place on Saturday, Oct. 25.

“I love the theme this year,” varsity cheerleader Harper Petit said. “I’m very excited for the game. I can’t wait to cheer for homecoming!”

As the players and cheerleaders prepare for the game, Student Council has been at work creating a theme and detailed dress-up days to foster student engagement and up the spirit.

“I feel like it’s really important,” Student Council President Story Hilliard said. “It’s coming back into style and people are going to appreciate it more than themes like carnival.”

The excitement for homecoming isn’t just limited to the game and dance, but also the dress-up days. On Monday, the week begins with a clash of preppy vs. alternative styles for a “Abercrombie vs. Hot Topic” day. Tuesday brings back one of the 2000s’ most iconic fashion trends, animal print. The week’s spirit continues through Wednesday, think all things pink and wear your most fetch attire for “On Wednesdays we wear pink.” Thursday, choose your side, for “pop princess vs. boyband.” Then, Friday, show off your Hornet spirit but make it Y2K for “green out (Y2K Style).”

The Y2K theme and dress-up days perfectly capture the range of interests and styles among the student body.

“Y2K is very pink and animal print, but there’s also the darker side to it,” Hilliard said. “I think our student body represents both sides, so I like to see the diversity of the Y2K era.”

This diverse and thoughtful theme has already captured many students’ imaginations. Their enthusiasm is evident as some are already planning out how to fully embrace this era’s fashion.

“I’m excited for animal print and pop princess,” senior Lexie Rose said. “I’ll wear a whole leopard outfit.”

This spirit and enthusiasm aren’t exclusive to students. While they discover the Y2K era, teachers remember it firsthand. For teachers who were in high school during the 2000s, this theme brings all the nostalgia. It prompted reflections of their own experiences and style choices.

”I feel like the late 90s/early 2000s were a good time to be in high school,” science teacher Shayna Reasoner said. “There was a definite style at that time that allows a lot of students to participate in the dress-up themes.”
