On Sept. 22, the newly reformed Student Leadership Committee held its first meeting. The Student Leadership Committee is a group of students who act as representatives of the student body for decisions affecting the campus.
“I’m super excited about it,” Principal Nate Driver said. “It’s been something I’ve been thinking and, you know, dreaming about for a while and planning for a while and had a passion for it, and so I’m happy to get it started and just work with the kids.”
The leadership committee had disbanded a few years ago. However, when Driver decided to bring it back, he personally picked out students who had been nominated by teachers for the committee.
“There’s a handful of juniors in there, but right now, I just wanted to focus on our upperclassmen as the leaders of the campus,” Driver said. “I think we’ll probably include some underclassmen in the future.”
Seniors were the top pick of nominated students for the committee. Once this program is fully settled in, there may be more nominees to consider for the group.
“I wish we could do this with a larger group, or with every kid in the school,” Driver said. “But I can’t, so I’ve just got to go with this group and start there, then start building up leaders.”
The leadership committee will be the deciding factor on whether a club is formed or not. Since this is still a new group, changes and considerations are to be expected.
“No matter what you’re into, there’s something for you, like business or entrepreneurship or electronics or whatever it is,” Senior Wyatt Hicks said. “You know, people want to have fun; to make it easy to fit in and just enjoy high school.”
Teachers nominated students to be considered by Driver. They chose students who exemplified leadership qualities and problem-solving skills.
“I love Azle because I feel like our staff is very supportive,” Senior Story Hillard said. “They encourage you to be yourself and to be the best version of yourself.”
There are many different sports and clubs to choose from at Azle. The staff is willing to help you find what sports or clubs work best for you
“The climate and culture of the campus is to have a student voice,” Driver said. “To make sure that I’m hearing from the students on a more regular basis, and that they hear from me.”
