Indie rock band “The Neighbourhood” announced their return in August, their first appearance as a band since 2022, following drummer Brandon Fried’s departure, which resulted in a three-year hiatus. In 2025, the band invited him back, resulting in their comeback in which they also released their new album “((((((ultraSOUND))))))” on Nov. 14.
The album consists of 15 songs, exploring themes of love, loss, emotional vulnerability, and maturing. The album digs deep into personal and romantic relationships and acknowledges the anxieties and unhealthy aspects of love.
(((((ultraSOUND))))) is an amazing return for the band. It is a mix between their older songs, such as “Afraid” and “Sweater Weather,” to their newer songs (before the three-year break), like “Daddy Issues” and “R.I.P. 2 My Youth.” One of the best songs in this new album is “Lovebomb” with its poetic lyrics and dreamy vocals. It’s just one of those songs that hit you deep. Another top-rated song includes “Stupid Boy,” which explores the struggles of early adulthood and explores how much one can mature.
The music is as good as it used to be. There was some controversy surrounding the returning drummer, Brandon Fried. Before the band broke up, Fried was fired from the band after the lead singer of The Marias, Maria Zardoya, accused him of inappropriate actions while under the influence. However, after the conflict, Fried posted a public apology, claiming he would seek help for his substance abuse in which he did. Deciding whether Fried should be forgiven is up to you, but personally, I believe if it is true that he went through therapy during the band’s break, and he has changed, then he should be forgiven.
In the end, The Neighbourhood is back, making even better music, and I cannot wait to see the future of this band.
