Walking into junior year, I was not expecting my schedule to include a class like coach House’s. Despite my plans to become a lawyer, I never imagined myself becoming interested in high school debate. As a past online student, who went from having no extracurriculars to becoming president of debate, I would have never thought coach House’s motivation and perseverance would convince me to gain passion for my career choice again.
Walking into her classroom, I immediately felt comforted. With the fairy lights and the homey feeling I got from the hanging vines, I knew that this would be an environment where I could find a place of my own in this school. I never really found excitement with my career choice as I always highlighted how long it could take me. Considering eight years of college, I never really thought the idea would bring me anything close to joy until I arrived at graduation where I could actually put my skills to work. The first day we got our resolution for Lincoln-Douglas debate, I instantly knew this would be something I could find my peace in. Coach House’s excitement for new perspectives and drive didn’t fail to inspire me to compete in UIL Speech and Debate, where my love for research and reason grew fonder.
As my last year of high school comes to a close, I remember every skill and quality Coach House has taught me and I credit her for every ounce of strength I have gained in my debate skillset. I also highlight my gratitude for her ability to revive my passion for law and thank her for her motivational and educational talks that have increased my understanding leading to every achievement I have reached in UIL Speech and Debate.
Happy teacher appreciation week!
