Dear Coach Jones,

It’s funny to think there was ever a time when I would show up to summer practice, run, and then go straight home without ever saying a word. Now, it’s odd if there’s ever a day when I don’t spend at least a couple of minutes talking to you about whatever’s on my mind. Whether it’s about school, running or whatever might be stressing me out at the time, you’re always willing to listen.

While you don’t always understand what is going through my head, you never fail to lend an ear, which most of the time is all I really need. Just knowing that I have someone I can go to for anything, whether it be advice or just a place to rant, has helped me immensely throughout high school.

I’m so incredibly appreciative of everything you’ve done for me and how you’ve stuck around through all my highs and lows. Something that will always stand out to me is the unwavering belief you’ve had in me, no matter what I was going through. Whether it was a time where I had no confidence in myself and wanted to quit, or a time where I was healthy and was happy with my progress, how much you cared, believed in me, or wanted to help me stayed the same.

I consider myself extremely lucky that I’ve gotten the privilege to have you as a coach, and you’ve taught me lessons about life and sport that I will carry with me well past high school. You’re so much more than a coach. You’re my greatest mentor, favorite person to tell my lore to, and certainly the most committed person I know when it comes to helping me reach my goals. Your guidance is by far the best thing I gained in high school.

Love,

Lil Hud (Kitty)
