“American Horror Story” (2011) is a popular horror anthology series largely based on American urban legends. The show’s concept was not hugely appreciated at the time of its debut, with every season including a new story, characters, locations, and frequently recycled actors. However, the series gained traction very quickly, becoming a must-watch for many horror fans.
Unfortunately, these days, the cult classic has taken a bit of a turn for the worse. The show had been declining in quality for quite some time. However, since the release of the ninth season, “1984” (2019), fans have complained that each season has been getting weaker in plot, character writing and casting. And I can’t say I disagree.
I started watching “American Horror Story” a couple of years ago, and I was immediately hooked. Everything was great until I reached the previously mentioned season nine, “1984.” I wouldn’t say it was awful. It’s not the worst. It was the first season I couldn’t get behind. It was just weak.
Since then, every season after has declined in quality. “American Horror Story: Delicate,” which began airing in 2023, wasn’t even written by the show’s primary writers. Ryan Murphy stepped down to allow Halley Feifer to take the reins this season, giving the season a strange feel. Every season starts quite mysteriously, but this one is just confusing. On top of that, the plot isn’t even wholly original, it was based on a book.
Another reason for the show’s diminishment is the cast. At this point in the series, most familiar faces had been phased out. Some of the most iconic actors, like Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Jessica Lange have all left the show by now. Presumably, for personal reasons. Though their reasons are valid, the show lost a lot of personality as most familiar faces gradually disappeared.
I think it’s great that they’re trying to keep the series going, but it’s time to let it go. It’s had a great run, but this isn’t the same show anymore. With different writers, different cast members, and over-complicated plotlines, it just isn’t good anymore. It’s time to lay “American Horror Story” to rest.
