The ESL program provides services for English-language learners and students who are often recent immigrants to the U.S. From these international students at our school, we can learn several vital lessons that they have to teach our community. More often than not, locals fail to understand the homesick and unwelcoming feeling coming to a new country can bring. Ultimately, students should create an inviting environment while also valuing the importance of international students in our school.

Being in such a secluded town as Azle has inspired me to spotlight prevalent issues occurring within our school in hopes of making this school a better place. Like anyone, immigrants are in search of comforting qualities that bring back those feelings of nostalgia and relief in a foreign region.

Occasionally, knowing multiple languages is not valued as much as knowing English. In reality, having the ability to communicate and connect with more people is a necessity in such a diverse country like the United States.
“It is a gift,” instructional specialist Keri Dorris said. “And it is something that we really need to make sure of that these children continue to have and embrace.”

Knowing that one can communicate in various ways is not only a cultural benefit but also a personal benefit that can be applied in your future career.

What can make students closed-minded is the lack of cultural influence that introduces and acclimates them to accept people for who they are and what they bring to our school. People are not just what they appear to be. They carry stories and meanings that have the potential to change the perspective of so many people.

As someone who shares similarities with some of the ESL students here–including the cultural shock I experienced when arriving here and having challenges regarding efficiency in both English and Spanish–I am familiar with how much it means to find relief in a big crowd. Finding people a non-English speaker can connect with can be extremely difficult, and it means so much when somebody goes out of their way to help you find that comfort when in most cases can seem impossible in an unfamiliar area.

The ESL program is not exclusive to just high school students but also exists at the primary, elementary, and junior high levels, teaching younger children the importance and value of language.

“To me it’s ignorant to say you should only know one language,” ESL teacher Shelly Stringer said.

What people don’t realize is that inclusivity is not a heavy favor to ask. It’s merely a courtesy that makes sure we are treating everyone with the utmost respect.

Making this school a safe space is important, not only for the quality of education but for the quality of relationships you will make throughout your school experience here. Do not limit your kindness to only those you know, reach out and extend that toward people who might need it most.

La importancia de la familiaridad international

El programa ESL ofrece servicios a estudiantes de inglés y a alumnos que son inmigrantes recientes en EE.UU. De estos estudiantes internacionales en nuestra escuela, podemos aprender varias lecciones vitales que tienen que enseñar a nuestra comunidad. La mayoría de las veces, la población local no comprende la sensación de nostalgia y falta de acogida que puede provocar la llegada a un nuevo país. Los estudiantes deben crear un ambiente acogedor y, al mismo tiempo, valorar la importancia de los estudiantes internacionales en nuestra escuela.

Estar en una ciudad tan aislada como Azle me ha inspirado contemplar los asuntos prevalentes que ocurren dentro de nuestra escuela. Tengo la esperanza de hacer de esta escuela un lugar mejor. Como cualquier persona, los inmigrantes están en busca de ser comodos y sentirse en hogar y que caben dentro de un ambiente extranjero.

En ocasiones, saber varios idiomas no se valora tanto como saber inglés. En realidad, tener la capacidad de comunicarse y conectar con más gente es una necesidad en un país tan diverso como Estados Unidos.

“Es un don”, afirma Keri Dorris, especialista en instrucción. “Y es algo que realmente tenemos que asegurarnos de que estos niños sigan teniendo y aprovechando”.

Saber que uno puede comunicarse de varias maneras no es sólo un beneficio cultural, sino también un beneficio personal que puede aplicarse en su futura carrera.

Lo que puede hacer que los estudiantes sean cerrados de mente es la falta de influencia cultural que les promueve a aceptar a las personas como son y por lo que aportan a nuestra escuela. Las personas no son sólo lo que parecen ser. Son portadoras de historias y experiencias significas que tienen el potencial de cambiar la perspectiva de mucha gente.

Como alguien que comparte similitudes con algunos de los estudiantes de ESL aquí -incluyendo el choque cultural que viví al llegar aquí y tener desafíos con respecto a la eficiencia tanto en inglés como en español- estoy familiarizado con lo mucho que significa encontrar alivio en una gran multitud. Encontrar gente con la que una persona que no habla inglés pueda conectar puede ser extremadamente difícil, y significa mucho cuando alguien se desvia para ayudarte a encontrar esa comodidad que, en la mayoría de los casos, puede parecer imposible en una ambiente.

El programa de ESL no es exclusivo para estudiantes de la prepa, sino que también existe en los niveles de primaria, primaria y secundaria, enseñando a los niños más pequeños la importancia y el valor del idioma.

“Para mí es ignorante decir que sólo se debe saber un idioma”, afirma Shelly Stringer, profesora de ESL.

Lo que la gente no se da cuenta es que la inclusividad no es un favor pesado que pedir. Es simplemente una cortesía que garantiza que tratamos a todo el mundo con el máximo respeto.

Hacer de esta escuela un espacio seguro es importante, no sólo por la calidad de la educación, sino por la calidad de las relaciones que se establaran a lo largo de tu experiencia escolar aquí. No limiten su amabilidad sólo a los conocidos, extiéndanla a quienes más la necesiten.
