Born and raised in small-town Forsan, Texas, football coach Kolten Self has always had an affinity for the closeness of tight-knit, small communities. Naturally, after studying Marketing at Angelo State University, Self found himself drawn to the intimacy of our small but growing town.
Since his own time in high school, Self has always gravitated towards sports and athletics; be it track, lifting, baseball, or, his passion and what he coaches here at Azle, football. Self’s athleticism has inspired and defined his life, driving him to perform and succeed throughout the career he enjoyed in college football.
Perhaps influencing Self most, though, were his coaches throughout the years, encouraging him to spread his passion and skill, and, as he puts it, “Take the leap of faith” into pursuing a career in coaching and education. These role model coaches and Self’s time in athletics have instilled in him a particularly positive attitude and work ethic that have carried him through life and success to now.
Since school started, Self has kept himself occupied with his duties and trainings as a football coach. This year, he most hopes to strengthen the bond he shares with his students and athletes, specifically wanting to “build relationships and continue to build on the relationships he already has.”
Self intends to make newcomers, especially those from out of town, feel accepted, just as our community has with him. Through his paternal friendliness, sociability and sternness when needed, he hopes above all to leave a “positive input on [his students’] lives,” guiding them to success much as his coaches did for him.
