Interrupting Weather
September 25, 2018
At the varsity football game on Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, the Marching Green Pride (MGP) performed for their home crowd for the first time during halftime. Due to weather, the MGP was rushed off of the field during their performance.
The MGP has waited patiently to perform for their home crowd. Before their performance, lightning struck very close to Azle High School, but the band took their chances.
The UIL handbook states: “When thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a visible lightning strike, or cloud-to-ground lightning bolt is seen, the thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location with lightning, suspend play for thirty minutes and take shelter immediately.”
Due to these rules, the band had to leave the field and go find shelter inside.
“I was happy but embarrassed because people weren’t in the line during that set,” senior Woodwind Captain Hunter Corder said. “Everyone just saw our spirit show and not the contest show.”
The MGP has yet to perform their competition show in front of their home crowd.
“I was really surprised and also I was annoyed because we didn’t get to finish our show,” freshman flute Makenzie Benton said. “Things could have went easier.”
The MGP has worked countless hours to put parts 1,2 and 3 on the field.
“Even though we didn’t get to perform our show, playing in the stands was still really fun,” freshman clarinet Emma Walker said.
