Feb. 1 the Azle cheer team went to NCA (Nation Cheerleaders Association) in Dallas at the Dallas Convention Center and placed 6th overall and had the highest scoring co-ed team which was placed in the top 10. Last year the cheer team placed 3rd at the UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Association) in Disney World.
¨We did really good, we really tried our hardest on the mat, and we gave everything we had on the mat.¨ junior Macee Peterson
The state competition started five years ago and the cheer team has gone every year and advanced to nationals each time. This was the team’s 5th year going to nationals making them the most decorated team in Texas.
¨The state competition started five years ago so we´ve gone five years, that was also our first year to go to Nationals,¨ head cheer coach Melissa McPherson said.
Although the team lost many members due to graduation, they also gained many members which led to this year being a building year. Luckily the cheer team did what they do best and kept the atmosphere positive. The team has improved on team bonding, uplifting each other and overall just having a positive vibe.
¨ Were more close-knit, and we have not had any fights during practice, and there’s just all-around a more positive attitude and were able to actually get work done,¨ senior Colton Hudson said.
The entire team could agree about how much they love being on the cheer team. The environment is described as supportive and positive and the team is more than just a team, its a family.
¨I can go to anyone on the team for anything and I hope that everyone feels the same about me,¨ senior Avery Rushing said.
