This year the boys’ powerlifting team is being accompanied by girls. This is the first year Azle will have a female powerlifting team. The team consists of 29 girls which usually split up for every meet so everyone has a chance to participate.

“Everyone did great at their first meet and the Azle powerlifting team is growing big,” junior Jilleighan Boivin said.

Tanner Street is the head coach for the girls and Bo Maines is the boys head coach.

“I was ecstatic and pumped up for the meet and was expecting a great outcome. All our girls and guys did extremely well on their lifts,” junior Mendy Tucker said.

The first meet of the season was on January 9: the girls went up against Saginaw and Brewer High Schools at Santo High School. The girls did well, taking home 1st place.

“For my weight class, 132, it was really tough to see where the other girls were standing and for me to comprehend where I needed to place,” Tucker said.

The next powerlifting meet is February 27 and 28 in Prosper.
