Over the past couple of weeks, several senior athletes have committed to colleges in and around the state of Texas. National Signing Day was celebrated on Feb. 6 and five baseball athletes signed to various colleges. National Signing Day is a day where seniors can sign a binding National Letter of Intent for a collegiate sport with a member of the United States National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Seniors Easton Elrod and Cooper Moorman will further their athletic and academic careers at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. Elrod committed to the ETBU baseball team and Moorman committed to the ETBU football team.

“I decided on ETBU because it felt like home,” Moorman said. “Another reason for choosing ETBU is because I felt that’s where I would grow the most not just at football but spiritually and as a man for the future.”

Senior Dave Johnson signed to North Central Texas College in Gainesville, Texas to continue his love of baseball. Senior Zach Westbrook committed to Richland College located in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas.

Senior Cody Akers is leaving Texas after committing to Seminole State College in Seminole, Oklahoma, where he will continue his baseball and academic career. Senior Jaden Ashley signed to Arlington Baptist University to further his baseball career.

“I committed to Seminole because of the competitive atmosphere, education, and I believed that a junior college would be a great place to start my future,” Akers said. “I will be playing baseball on a full-ride scholarship. I plan to study aviation and someday become a commercial pilot.”

All the athletes that have already signed are excited to pursue their sport at their respective colleges and plan to major in a variety of different fields.

“I’m continuing to play because it’s my passion,” Moorman said. “I’ve played football my whole life and it has built me into the man I am today, not just the game but the coaches that I’ve had along the way. I wouldn’t be here without them.”
